Bir Singh Mahato, a Forward Bloc Lok Sabha member from Purulia, was charged with raping a minor in 1982. Twenty-four years later, Purulia's district court convicted him and sent him to jail. Mahato was charged with rape and rioting but has been contesting on AIFB ticket for the past 24 years. Mahato has been sentenced to 10 years' rigourous imprisonment.
