Liverpool, Chelsea win in EPL; Barca rout Atletico Madrid

New Delhi: Liverpool won a thrilling battle in English Premier League on Sunday coming from behind to beat Manchester City 3-2.

Manchester City took the lead and by half time Liverpool were in deep trouble as they were 0-2 down.

Stephan Ireland opening the scored for City in the 19th minute and another goal in the 41st minute by Javier Garrido put the pressure on the Reds.

However, Liverpool responded in style in the second half with Fernando Torres leading the fightback.

Torres first guided the ball into the net to pull back the deficit and then later with a neat header.

And Dirk Kuyt scored the winning goal after a Torres shot rebounded.

Chelsea's 2-0 demolition of the highly rated Aston Villa saw some very attacking football.

Joe Cole scored the opener for the Blues in the 21st minute by nicking in a Frank Lampard pass.

Nicolas Anelka doubled the lead just before half time, when he followed up a Michael Ballack miss into the back of the net.

Chelsea remain on top of the league standings ahead of Liverpool on goal difference.

In the La Liga, two-time defending Champions Real Madrid managed a 2-2 draw against Espayol on Sunday.

Espanyol were the first to get on the board when Raul Tamudo was brought down by Gabriel Heinze in the 21st minute.

The captain took the spot kick himself and converted with ease. But four minutes later, Real Madrid's Raul Gonzalez equalised for the home side with a header.

Luis Garcia then made it 2-1 for the visitors when he slid the ball in at the far post off a Roman Martinez cross.

Again Raul came to the rescue when he worked with Rafael van der Vaart to score the equaliser for the home team.

In another match, Barcelona demolished Athletico Madrid.

Rafael Marquez started the rout for the home side in the third minute and then Samuel Eto'o converted a spot kick when Lionel Messi was brought down in the penalty area by Tomas Ujfalusi.

Madrid pulled one back with Maxi Rodriguez scoring with a curling shot.

Substitute Thierry Henry then started move and finished it with a goal that made it 6-1 for Barcelona.

Meanwhile, Valencia went to the top of La Liga after a second-half goal Manuel Fernandes goal gave them a 1-0 win at Real Valladolid.

Valencia and Villarreal are on 16 points from six games but they have the better goal difference.

Also Sevilla routed Athletic Bilbao 4-0 with Mali striker Frederic Kanoute opening the scoring in the 26th minute. Renato then doubled the lead in the 40th minute.

Adriano Correia and Ernesto Chevanton scored in the second half to take their team on 14 points.

Sporting Gijon broke a five-game losing streak with a 2-0 win at Real Mallorca which lifted them from the bottom of the table at the expense of Real Betis, who lost 2-1 at Villarreal on Saturday. Almeria scored twice in the final minutes to carve out a 2-2 draw at Getafe.
