New Delhi: People planning candle light vigils in the Capital to highlight their cause will now have to think of another mode of protest as Delhi Police on Friday decided to prohibit processions carrying flames.

City Police Commissioner Y S Dadwal issued an order in this regard which prohibits the carrying of "torch carrying live flames or live fire candles or live fire in any form in processions, rallies and functions" in the Capital.

The order comes in the backdrop of police receiving inputs that some people may indulge in activities prejudicial to the maintenance of peace in the city, a senior police official said.

"We have received information that such activities may seriously endanger life and property of the citizens and maintenance of law and order," the official said.

Those found disobeying this order shall be punishable under section 188 (disobedience to an order lawfully promulgated by a public servant) of the IPC.

The contravention of the order may lead to an imprisonment up to six months or a fine of Rs 1,000, the official said.
