A new social studies textbook for Class VII students in Kerala has enraged religious groups. A chapter in the textbook allegedly promotes atheism and says there is no need for religion. The Church, a prominent Hindu organisation and a Muslim political party have accused the Left Democratic Front government of promoting Marxism through the textbook. Religious groups have warned that they would start statewide protests if the Government doesn’t scrap references to atheism in the textbook. The government says the textbook promotes religious tolerance.
Since 2006, church leaders have denounced Left in 10 pastoral letters.
